Household Composting

Household composting, a concrete and sustainable solution

What is composting?

Composting is a natural process by which micro-organisms convert organic material into a soil-like product called humus or compost.

What are micro-organisms?

They are microscopic decomposers such as bacteria and fungi. They break down organic matter into the basic minerals needed for plant growth. That's why the duration of the composting process and the quality of the finished product (compost) depend on the ‘‘menu'' offered these micro-organisms.

What do micro-organismes need to live?

Just like human beings, micro-organisms require food. They get it from the organic matter, biodegradeable substances that decompose in the presence of air, that we dispose of as garbage.

Are micro-organisms alone responsible for decomposition?

No, it's possible to help them by paying attention to shredding the materials, the moisture level, the temperature and the aeration of the compost pile.
